            The course is designed to build on language skills acquired in previous levels. The class is conducted exclusively in Spanish and will fine tune the grammar and language structures learned the previous year with the addition of some new concepts. Students will be able to express their ideas in a variety of tenses and will be able to talk about nature and the environment, science and technology, the economy and jobs, pop culture and social media, and literature and art. The study of literature will be introduced in the form of the short story where students will learn to analyze and discuss literature in Spanish. As in previous levels, students will have access to authentic materials such as films, songs, podcasts, newspaper and magazine articles as well as other print media. Students will be assessed on their oral, aural, written and reading skills. The course will increase students’ fluency and cultural competency as well as prepare them for the AP Spanish Language & Culture course the following school year. Prerequisites: Honors 西班牙三 or equivalent, teacher recommendation and/or placement test.

        • Upper French Classes Play Pétanque

          Upper level French classes found a great excuse to get outside in the sunny spring weather: pétanque! Pétanque is a game of boules, or balls, similar in nature to Italy’s bocce. Pétanque became popular in the early 1900s in Provence, France. Typically, it is played on hard dirt or gravel, but the lawns in front of Old Main and Lodge were perfectly adequate for Madame 教皇’s classes. The object is to toss one’s ball closest to the small wooden marker ball, called a “jack,” scoring points that accumulate to a win. The classes strengthened their language skills by communicating only in French as they played this game, often with humorous outcomes for the unpracticed players.

          For Grier teachers, learning never stops! For example, four teachers from Grier's Modern Language Department attended a program at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The IUP Annual Spring Methodology Conference on Foreign Language Teaching provides professional development to Grier's language teachers, keeping their classroom approaches and philosophies aligned with current best practices. They apply this knowledge to their Grier classrooms, providing premier language instruction in French and Spanish.

        • Mr. Wilson Sings with Choir in Morocco

          Grier loves to share the wonderful experiences of talented faculty members. During Grier's Spring Break, Modern Language teacher Mr. Tristan Wilson had the incredible opportunity to join the Juniata College Concert Choir on a tour to Morocco as an alumni.

          For nine days, Mr. Wilson and the choir visited and performed in cities, including: Casablanca, Tangier, and Fes. The choir sang 17 different works ranging from classical to very contemporary, and in a multitude of languages that included: 英语, Latin, Xhosa, Tamil, Spanish, and Krao. It was extremely rewarding to sing with such a dynamic group of students under the direction of Dr. Russell K. Shelley.

        • Grier Senior Awarded Study Abroad Scholarship

          Grier wishes to congratulate senior Lauren S. who was on the Grier Europe Spring Break trip when she learned the happy news that Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, had awarded her the Eagles Abroad Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students like Lauren who “recognize the value of being a citizen of the world.” 

          With this scholarship, Lauren will have the opportunity to study abroad during her undergraduate college career at Juniata. While attending Grier, Lauren has taken upper level Spanish from Señorita Leen. Lauren plans to study abroad in a Hispanic country yet to be decided; however, while in Barcelona, Spain, she did drink from the Font de Canaletes, so legend has it that she’s bound to return to Barcelona one day. Enhorabuena, Lauren!

        • Spring Break in Europe

          Twenty-nine Grier girls accompanied five Grier teachers on a spring break trip of a lifetime. The group traveled to Europe where they spent time in London, Paris, southern France, Barcelona, and Madrid and the surrounding areas of Spain. French teacher Madame 教皇 and Spanish teacher Señorita Leen designed the tour to provide students with ample opportunities to experience the art, culture, music, food, and languages of France and Spain. While in Paris, France, the group was able to catch up with Grier alumna Tess M.'18 who is studying at 科学 Po in Rennes, France. During the group's last day in Spain, four Grier girls had the opportunity to learn some flamenco dance steps from a professional. 

          The adventure abroad was quite a whirlwind and though they enjoyed their time abroad, the girls were enthusiastic to return to Grier for the last leg of the school year. What lucky girls!

        • Grier French Students Support School in Haiti

          Last, week, several Grier students wore shirts emblazoned with the words “CE MOMENT WHEN YOU START PENSER EN DEUX LANGUES AT THE SAME TEMPS,” a clever mix of French and 英语 to illustrate the sentiment felt by many a second-language learner: that moment when you start thinking in two languages at the same time. Not only did the shirts serve to visually unify the French language learners at Grier, proceeds from the sales of the shirts benefitted the 415 school children of the Bainet Parish of Haiti.

        • Le Diner en Blanc Brings Paris to Grier

          Le Dîner en Blanc is an annual event that originated in Paris and now takes place in numerous cities throughout the world. Participants are asked to dress all in white and arrive with picnic style food at a secret location that is only disclosed shortly before the diner takes place. French students at Grier reenacted this event on campus by dressing in white and meeting in Nana's Place where Mme. 教皇 had prepared a tabletop picnic of a variety of cheeses, French bread, and fruit.

          Every time I travel, the world feels closer to me. I would say that the four weeks in France with the Tufts Summit program is definitely the highlight of my summer and makes me more qualified as a global citizen.

        • Grier Student Apprentices with Swiss Chocolatier

          Grier students spend their summer break participating in a variety of activities, adventures, and explorations. Returning Grier junior, Zai '20, had a fantastic chance to work at a chocolate boutique in Switzerland.

          At the During Chocolatier, she began her apprenticeship helping to package chocolates, then moving up the ranks to cashier, and helping make some of the confections, which were all made in-house. Zai reports that most often, she served as a translator for tourists, since many of her Francophone co-workers could not speak 英语. Indeed, she says, working at a Swiss chocolatier greatly improved her French language skills. Overall, she says, it “was a very exciting experience for me.” Zai studies French language at Grier with Madame 教皇.

          ¡Pasándola bien! Students in Srta. Leen’s Spanish classes are having a great time developing their appreciation for Spanish language and culture. In addition to the induction of new members into the Spanish Language Honor Society earlier this month, Spanish students recently saw Spanish works of art in the National Gallery and experienced the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet in Pittsburgh.

          The extended class period time of Lab Days allowed the French language students of Madame 教皇, Monsieur Wilson, and Madame 谢弗 to create the French culinary delight: crepes. Maple Forest, the on-campus residence of the Grier family, provided a fully-equipped kitchen and dining room for the students to prepare and enjoy their crepes.
